What is the difference between EV-ready wiring and an EV charger installation?

EV-ready wiring is the dedicated 240V circuit and outlet or junction box run from your panel to the parking spot - the infrastructure. An EV charger installation is mounting and connecting the actual charging unit to that circuit. You can be EV-ready years before you own a car or a charger; the wiring is the part that is easiest to do during construction or a remodel, before walls are closed up.

Can EV-ready wiring be roughed in during a remodel or new construction?

Yes, and it is the ideal time. Running conduit and wire while walls are open costs far less than adding it after the fact, and it means your garage or driveway is ready for a charger the moment you need one - no cutting into finished walls later.

Should I install a NEMA 14-50 outlet or a hardwired connection?

For EV chargers, plan on hardwired: New Jersey utilities no longer permit plug-in EV charger installations on NEMA outlets, and hardwiring is what most manufacturers recommend for higher-amperage units anyway. A NEMA 14-50 outlet still makes sense if the circuit is for other 240V equipment. We will size and terminate the run for the use you actually have planned.

Does EV-ready wiring add value to a home?
